Social Media Trends to Look Out for in 2022
The COVID-19 pandemic hurt many industries, but social media was not one of them…
No surprise that screen time increased dramatically–just think about how much time you spent going down a rabbit hole on TikTok. The shift to at-home learning and work also drastically changed social media tendencies, which might trickle into 2022. At least, that’s why we’re making these predictions…
People Have Short Attention Spans
Gotta say this fast: attention spans are now down to 8 seconds. Let me say that again: eight seconds (Oh wait, I probably already lost you using up all that time)! You have mere moments to grab your viewer’s attention before their eyes glaze over and they start scrolling again. For those of us in public relations, it’s definitely not enough time to pitch an entire campaign, but it may fit a 30-second video or 100-word text blurb perfectly. Bite-sized content, they call it. Think offering a Hershey’s Kiss as opposed to the full candy bar.
Creativity is Climbing
Given how bad things sucked the past two years, is it any wonder people want to escape reality? New toys, like augmented and virtual reality, took us away. AR is where a camera transforms a rather dull world into a much brighter one. VR generates a different world simulation. The global AR and VR market is expected to grow to an astronomical $209.2 billion by 2022.
Users Seek Involvement
TikTok boomed during quarantine, as users spent hours scrolling through cat videos, makeup tutorials, and baking recipes. (And let’s not forget all those synchronized dance videos. Please just stop!) These 30-second videos (there’s that bite-sized content!) not only caught but maintained people’s attention. The app also allowed for a new level of fame, as stars rose through the app and landed in Hollywood. This idea of user-generated content creates a community of collaboration among social media users. And people love it.
Bottom Line: The traditional posts, replies, and shares won’t cut it anymore. Keep audiences engaged, and keep social media, well, social!
