#iPhoneReporting: Revolutionizing Message Making for PR Pros and Spokespeople
You can use your iPhone for a lot more than talking and texting (and playing games, of course.) If you’re in public relations or a spokesperson for an agency, big or small, your smartphone might be the most important piece of technology you own. It can be a money maker and an incredible time saver, especially when major news breaks, like the snow storms currently hitting the East Coast.
Neal Augenstein knows. He’s the groundbreaking digital editor and reporter for DC’s all news leader WTOP radio and WTOP.com. Neal is also pioneering what’s called “smartphone reporting.” He does all his reports right from his iPhone–from interviews to editing, posting to air and promoting on social media. He’s so far ahead in the field that one of his iPhones has actually been donated to the Newseum’s permanent collection.
In this exclusive Skype interview, Neal shows how spokespeople for agencies can save time by recording updates via their phones, posting them to a free audio app like SoundCloud and then sharing them with the world via social media. That can make an enormous difference when news breaks, especially by cutting down on doing the same interview over and over. And Neal says if it works for spokespeople, it can also work for public relations professionals looking to get out the word about a new product, service or message about their clients. (As a company in that field, we’re not even sure why we’re giving away this secret.)
