Aziz Link, Like, Loves Sync Savings
Aziz Ansari, comedian and star of NBC’s Parks and Recreation, has been recruited to put the funny in American Express’ newest plan to take over the world — pairing with Facebook, Foursquare and Twitter. “Sync” is the name of the super un-secret plan, and thanks to Ansari, it is reaching the masses. You may have heard the phrase ‘Link, Like, Love’ on Facebook or television recently; that is all part of the Sync plan. By linking your AmEx card and ‘liking’ things on Facebook, you can be on your way to specialized savings.
In the new commercial, Aziz tries to use the power of Link, Like, Love to his personal advantage, just maybe a little out of order. He instantly falls in love with a girl he just met—Jessica. In order to woo her to the fullest, Aziz decides to stalk her Facebook (comedy gold) to see her likes. Immediately, he takes off to the nearest stores to use his linked American Express card to buy and fill his house with everything on her profile. A kink appears in his plan when she runs late and has to meet him at the restaurant. Aziz finds a way to incorporate his recent purchases into the date but came in a little over the top.
But American Express isn’t only pairing up with Facebook to make impressing your date easier; they are also working with Foursquare to make stalking easier and Twitter to give new definition to one-liners! No- not really, but they are teaming up with the two powerhouse Social Media companies to offer deals and increase business. If you are an American Express cardholder and you check-in to certain stores and restaurants, you will gain access to exclusive deals. Now in addition to badges and merits, users are getting 10% off their purchase or $5 off a $20 bill. Just for checking in! For example, if you use your AmEx card to pay for a bill of $5 or more, a $5 savings is directly applied to your monthly statement. This increases the usage of AmEx cards and saves the customer money, win-win.
Twitter is also in on the action. By re-tweeting sponsored tweets by American Express or by using certain hash-tags, “tweeters” are unlocking special deals as well. Of course, you have to link your card number to Twitter to gain the savings but the upside is that there are no coupons or print outs; the savings go straight onto your AmEx account and will be applied at the time of purchase.
Sync’s Link, Like, Love plan may not have worked so well for Aziz in the commercial but it can still save you major bucks and maybe help you earn brownie points with your new girlfriend. As long as you don’t fly into your first date with a parachute and kayak, of course.
