10 Ways to Write a Successful News Release
Now that you understand the importance of a good news release, it is time to begin writing one. These ten tips will help you write a successful news release that brings your story to center stage:
1. Find a Newsworthy Angle
Offer timely information about a recent event or expansion, a new product or service, or a meaningful trend.
2. Make the Beginning Count
Most journalists glance at the headline, subject line and first sentence to decide whether or not they’re interested. These three elements must be creative, compelling and informative.
3. Identify a Clear News Source
Make sure you identify a clear news source in the headline. It is important for your audience to know who is issuing the release or making the announcement.
4. Give a Concise Summary
Follow the headline with a concise summary that covers what’s happening and who’s involved in one or two sentences.
5. Don’t Be Too Long—or Too Short
The standard length of a news release is between 300 and 800 words.
6. Include Links
Add links in your news release to help readers find more information, but don’t overdo it. Stick to one link per 100 words.
7. Use a Quote
Include a strong quote from a company representative to enhance your story.
8. Paint a Picture
Tell your story with visuals. Add images and video to distinguish your news release from others.
9. Include a Boilerplate
Add a boilerplate paragraph at the end of the release that includes information about your company or all the parties involved in a joint release.
10. Don’t Forget a Media Contact
Include a valid phone number and email address so journalists know how to reach you.
A news release is one of the best ways to get your company’s name out there. Media outlets will be able to find your company easier and may even ask you for a media appearance.
Luckily you won’t have to step in front of any camera or microphone without the proper media training. Next week we’ll review what you need to do to make the most out of your media appearance. Contact On The Marc Media at 301-545-0108 for more information.
