In the Spotlight: Jen Dunphy Empowers Men to Take Control of Their Health
Men are 25% less likely than women to have visited the doctor in the past year, and almost 40% are more likely to have skipped recommended cholesterol screenings. In a recent article featured in Alternative Medicine Magazine, “Empowering Men to Take Control of Their Health,” Get Real Health Clinical Subject Matter Expert Jennifer Dunphy calls attention to this prominent issue.
This problem hits home for Dunphy, whose father suffers from a chronic medical condition. Jennifer claims many men’s reluctance to seek out and follow through with proper medical treatment stems from not having a doctor they trust, mistakenly believing nothing is wrong, procrastination, refusal to spend money on a doctor’s visit, fear of a serious diagnosis or invasive procedures, and machismo ideals that make men believe they must “tough it out”.
Dunphy says the severe consequences of not keeping up with health significantly outweigh the hassle, as studies show men are 1.5 times more likely to die from disease than women. However, Jennifer is confident that the advent of mobile technology and communications offers a solution to men’s disinclination. “Thanks to the union of innovative technology and customized health applications, there is a new way for men to control their health and communicate with the physician of their choice.”
Dunphy explains that mobile-enabled app platforms, such as Get Real Health’s InstantPHR®, serve as an “invitation to mobilize men, through the user-friendly design of mobile devices, so they may become better custodians of their own health”.
