The Industry Shift to More “Real” Social Media Content
The rapid rise of upstart social media app BeReal puts content creators and brands on notice: be authentic or be ignored.
Like TikTok, BeReal built its ecosystem around authenticity from day one. The result: Posts on both of these platforms are getting far more engagement than polished and curated content on Facebook and Instagram.
Why You Should Care
If you’re a business, this shift toward “being real” means audiences want to see that your company is run by an actual human being. Try having a soul before having a brand.
And stop chasing perfection. Real people know there are no perfect companies. But real people value companies that strive for improvement, that genuinely treat customers with respect, and that aren’t afraid to show their personality.
Here are three quick tips to help you be true to yourself while attracting the engagement you crave.
Create some “day in the life” TikToks. (Here’s an idea: Show how your employees start their day. Reveal the unique ways they contribute to your business.) Or, play with a trend, redefining it in a way that fits your company’s aesthetic and values.
If you don’t have the time or bandwidth to come up with a constant stream of creative TikToks or BeReal moments, strike up partnerships with micro-influencers. Pay them to create and curate content about you, which they can share with their followers and you can repost on your own social media channels. (Or, simply reach out to us here at On The Marc Media for help.)
You don’t have to reinvent the wheel or spend a ton of money. Just do what we all learned in kindergarten: share. Share others’ posts that you find interesting, meaningful, or just amusing — and say why you feel that way. Do you listen to a music playlist that gets you pumped at work? Share it. Did some of your team members do a spontaneous after-hours trash cleanup on a nearby bike trail or creek? Share it. Just be sure you’re sharing stuff that’s real (not mis- or disinformation) and that conveys something about who you are.
