Many people are going under the plastic surgeon’s knife with hopes of walking out of the operating room looking like Megan Fox or Taye Diggs. Though plastic surgeons can work wonders when it comes to transforming your appearance, On The Marc Media client Dr. Emeka Onyewu, plastic surgeon at Jamachi Medi Spa & Plastic Surgery, explains the importance of having realistic expectations, and what makes a good candidate for plastic surgery.
The first thing you need to do is find out if you are a good candidate for the procedure you are considering. Dr. Onyewu says that there are two aspects of determining if someone’s an ideal candidate – physical and mental health. Physically, patients should be free of serious illnesses, heart and lung conditions and should be in general good health. Even more important is a patient’s mental well being, thus having realistic expectations pre and post-operation is important.
“You really need to understand what is it that you want to change and what you can really expect from the procedure,” said Dr. Onyewu. “It is also important to understand your reasons for wanting to make the change.”
In fact, Dr. Onyewu’s favorite patients are those who come into their consultation already having done their research, are ready to ask questions, are serious about the procedure and are really just looking for the right doctor to perform the operation.
“The more that person understands about the procedure the better off they will be. You need to know not only the alternatives, but the risks and the possible complications, how much pain you’ll be in and how long it’ll be before you really see your final results,” said Dr. Onyewu. “Patients who have done their homework before entering the office are usually more likely to have realistic expectations and are usually more satisfied with the post-operative results.”
Keep these expectations in mind
-Do your research
-Understand the possible risks and complications
-Get an idea of how your post-operation results will look
-Consult a certified plastic surgeon
-Get the procedure done for yourself and no one else
-Arrange pre and post-operation plans
-Know how long it will take to heal, go back to work, etc.
